Strange as it may seem, Archaeopteryx and. Evolution of mammalian auditory ossicles. The evolution of mammalian auditory ossicles is one of the most well- documented. Over the course of the evolution of mammals, one lower and one upper jaw bone (the articular and quadrate) lost their purpose in the jaw joint and were put to new use in the middle ear, connecting to the existing stapes bone and forming a chain of three bones (collectively called the ossicles) which transmit sounds more efficiently and allow more acute hearing. In mammals, these three bones are known as the malleus, incus, and stapes (hammer, anvil, and stirrup respectively). Mammals and birds also differ from other vertebrates by having evolved a cochlea. The evidence that the malleus and incus are homologous to the reptilian articular and quadrate was originally embryological, and since this discovery an abundance of transitional fossils has both supported the conclusion and given a detailed history of the transition. A member of the NK2 class of homeobox genes .. The ossicles are a complex system of levers whose functions include: reducing the amplitude of the vibrations; increasing the mechanical force of vibrations; and thus improving the efficient transmission of sound energy from the eardrum to the inner ear structures. The ossicles act as the mechanical analog of an electrical transformer, matching the mechanical impedance of vibrations in air to vibrations in the liquid of the cochlea. The net effect of this impedance matching is to greatly increase the overall sensitivity and upper frequency limits of mammalian hearing, as compared to reptilian hearing. The details of these structures and their effects vary noticeably between different mammal species, even when the species are as closely related as humans and chimpanzees. Other features are required when classifying fossils, since mammary glands and other soft- tissue features are not visible in fossils. Paleontologists therefore use a distinguishing feature that is shared by all living mammals (including monotremes), but is not present in any of the early Triassictherapsids (. The earliest amniotes had a jaw joint composed of the articular (a small bone at the back of the lower jaw) and the quadrate (a small bone at the back of the upper jaw). All non- mammalian amniotes use this system including lizards, crocodilians, dinosaurs (and their descendants the birds) and therapsids; so the only ossicle in their middle ears is the stapes. But mammals have a different jaw joint, composed only of the dentary (the lower jaw bone which carries the teeth) and the squamosal (another small skull bone). In mammals, the quadrate and articular bones have evolved into the incus and malleus bones in the middle ear. This allowed amniotes to lay eggs on dry land, while amphibians generally need to lay their eggs in water. The first amniotes apparently arose in the late Carboniferous from the ancestral reptiliomorphs (a group of amphibians whose only living descendants are amniotes). Within a few million years two important amniote lineages became distinct: mammals' synapsid ancestors and the sauropsids, from which lizards, snakes, crocodilians, dinosaurs and birds are descended. Unfortunately it is difficult to be sure about when each of them evolved, since vertebrate fossils from the late Carboniferous are very rare, and therefore the actual first occurrences of each of these types of animal might have been considerably earlier. The evolution of mammalian jaw joints and ears did not proceed neatly in lockstep with the evolution of other mammalian features. In other words, jaw joints and ears do not define any except the last of the various stages into which paleontologists divide the evolution towards the mammalian anatomy. Mammalian and non- mammalian jaws. In the mammal configuration, the quadrate and articular bones are much smaller and form part of the middle ear. Note that in mammals the lower jaw consists of only the dentary bone. Early tetrapod and amniote ears. But the earliest tetrapods, amphibians and amniotes probably did not have ear drums. In fact ear drums apparently evolved independently three to six times, in: stegocephalians (very primitive amphibians); in anurans (the amphibian group that includes frogs and toads); in synapsids (mammals and their extinct relatives), in diapsids (the most important sauropsid group, including lizards, crocodiles, dinosaurs and birds); perhaps separately in anapsids (turtles and their extinct relatives), if turtles are not modified diapsids; probably in seymouriamorphs (a group of reptiliomorphs); and possibly in some temnospondyls (primitive amphibians). But there is increasing evidence that synapsids, eureptiles and parareptiles developed eardrums connected to the inner ear by stapes during the Permian. The jaw joint consisted of the articular bone in the lower jaw and the quadrate in the upper jaw. The early pelycosaurs (late Carboniferous and early Permian) most probably did not have tympanic membranes (external eardrums), and their massive stapes bones supported the braincase, with the lower ends resting on the quadrates. But their descendants the therapsids (including mammals' ancestors) probably did have tympanic membranes and these probably were in contact with the quadrate bones; and the stapes bones were still in contact with the quadrates but functioned as auditory ossicles rather than braincase supports; so the therapsids' quadrates had a dual function, as part of the jaw joint and as parts of the hearing system. Some of the bones were lost, but the quadrate (which is directly connected to the stapes), the articular (connected to the quadrate) and the angular (connected to the articular) became free- floating and associated with the stapes. This occurred at least twice in the mammaliformes (. The Multituberculates, which lived from about 1. M years ago (mid- Jurassic) to about 3. M years ago (early Oligocene) had jaw joints that consisted of only the dentary and squamosal bones, and the quadrate and articular bones were part of the middle ear; but other features of their teeth, jaws and skulls are significantly different from those of mammals. In early synapsids such as the pelycosaurs, the quadrate and articular had to function as the jaw joint, and this severely limited how far these bones could be modified to alter the frequency range of the ear. But once these bones were no longer involved in the jaw joint, variations which affected hearing would not also affect jaw joint function, and this allowed unconstrained evolution of the mammalian hearing apparatus. This series of three bones acts as an impedance matching system to improve sound transmission and allow enhanced hearing. But they also suggest that it was not a simple linear process from the early therapsid jaw (quadrate- articular joint) and middle ear (with stapes as the only ossicles) to the modern mammalian anatomy. This fits with the popular image of small, nocturnal insectivorous mammals surviving in niches not accessible to the large, dominant contemporary dinosaurs. The enhanced hearing, particularly in the higher frequencies, would be helpful for nocturnal animals, in particular for detecting insects. They therefore have the appearance of representing a discontinuity in the tree of life. But in the early 1. This hypothesis made sense, not only of the existence of these middle- ear bones, but also of certain other features of the anatomy, such as the paths taken by nerves in the head. As evolutionary biology began to be expanded upon, this relationship became treated as one of common descent. For the evolutionary explanation to make sense, it seemed to demand that there would be a transition in function between being part of the feeding mechanism in the joint of the jaw and serving only in hearing; and this would mean that somehow there had to be an intermediate connecting these two quite different functions. With the discovery of Morganucodon and other. There was a double jaw joint: the . This meant a confirmation of the pattern of inference from comparative anatomy to evolutionary biology. The earliest mammals were generally small animals, probably nocturnal insectivores. This suggests a plausible evolutionary mechanism driving the change; for with these small bones in the middle ear, a mammal has extended its range of hearing for higher- pitched sounds which would improve the detection of insects in the dark. There is still one more connection with another part of biology: genetics suggests a mechanism for this transition, the kind of major change of function seen elsewhere in the world of life being studied by evolutionary developmental biology. TIMOTHY 1: 1- 5 - PUTTING ON A FACEI call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you (2 Timothy 1: 5). Several customers were waiting in line at a London cheese shop one day when the famous preacher C. Spurgeon came in to make a purchase. Not one to stand around calmly, he became a little fidgety as he stood behind the others and waited his turn. Noticing a fine block of cheese in the shop window, he couldn't resist touching it, and gently tapped the cheese with his walking stick. To his surprise, the . Spurgeon later recounted. The faith and prayers of mothers can have a profound impact on the lives of their children. First Samuel 1 records Hannah. And in a letter to Timothy, Paul referred to the faith of Timothy. No wonder he was used of God in the early church. I know a pastor. Whenever her husband left for an important meeting or visit, she prayed a sentence or two for him, asking the Lord. She usually prayed aloud and the children often heard her, but she never thought much about the impact it would have on them. Imagine this mother. But they can always pray. He came to one home and asked the girl who answered the door if he might talk to her mother. Susanna was said to have prayed for her children two hours a day, along with teaching them their basic school subjects. She was well- prepared to care for and lead her large family. She herself was the daughter of a well- known minister, the youngest of his twenty- five children. Susanna benefited from a godly home and passed the heritage onto her children. Although his Christian heritage probably did not span as many years as that of the Wesleys, Timothy also benefited from a godly home. His mother and grandmother, Eunice and Lois, are two largely unsung heroines of the Bible. Yet she concludes that her role is indispensable for the total well- being of her children. How true! Psalm 3. 4: 1. 8 offers these compassionate words: . Paul reminds him to let no man despise his youth, and to the Corinthians he wrote: . He was a splendid young preacher, with good ancestry and in dead earnest, but he needed to be set on fire. Paul advises Timothy to kindle the sacred flame within him. It is not our fire but God's that we are to kindle. It was the gift of the Spirit for his peculiar ministry, the supreme qualification for preaching and witnessing and service. And in application it represents the fire of the Spirit in each and all of us believers. But, above all that, he would say, ! Keep aglow at any cost! No price is too great to pay to be a ! Better go to lengths that may seem absurd to others to keep the fire blazing! There are so many things that can smother the fire. Willful sin will do it. Our Lord told us that the candle of testimony may be smothered by the bushel or the bed. The bushel stands for money. The bed stands for luxury, ease, worldly pleasure, the sloth that so enervates the soul. Neglect will smother the fire. Let the fire alone and it will bum low and the ashes will gather. If we neglect the means of grace, prayer, the Word, and holy exercise, we shall soon need a stirring. Then, too, others can quench the Spirit and smother our fire. If the devil cannot keep us from being saved, he next endeavors to make average Christians of us, and in this he usually succeeds. But when a real, wide. Certainly, fear can choke the fire. Paul says to Timothy in the very word next to the passage we are considering, . Whatever fear you may have, it is not of God, for He hath not given us such a spirit. Let us remember that stirring up the gift of God is our business. God will not do it for us. We must rouse ourselves from our lethargy and get down to business in prayer and feeding upon the Word and holy exercise. It is related that in Scotland years ago, before the day of matches, the fires had gone out throughout a community. The people set out looking for someone who had a fire. At last, far up on a hillside, they found a humble home where the hearthstone glowed with cheery flame. Thoughtful and inspirational stories. STORIES TO MAKE YOU THINK. Some of the most memorable lessons in life come from stories - whether these be nursery rhymes or children's fables read to us by our parents, parables from the Bible or Jewish wisdom tales, or motivational booklets like . I thought that it would be fun and helpful to collect some of the stories that I've found meaningful and share them with you. Each new story is added at the top of the page, so visit as often as you like and feel free to e- mail me your story. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever. They teach the world we create. They teach the morality we live by. They teach it much more effectively than moral precepts and instructions. A thing becomes meaningful only when we can embed it in a story. Stories give coherence to the confusion of our experience. The world is unfair, unjust, unknowable, out of control. It binds everyone together. Imagining the little fellow as a person he recalled a few things about the pencil. Always remember these five things - never forget them - and you will become the best pencil you can be! No matter what else happens, you must continue to write.”. It seemed the pencil listened to him and promised he would remember these five things so that he could live his life with heart and purpose. Naturalists tell us that it stood for some four hundred years. It was a seedling when Columbus landed at San Salvador, and half grown when the pilgrims settled at Plymouth. In the end, however, an army of beetles attacked the tree and leveled it to the ground. The insects ate their way through the bark and gradually destroyed the inner strength of the tree by their tiny but incessant attacks. A forest giant which age had not withered, nor lightning blasted, nor storms subdued, fell at last before beetles so small that a man could crush them between his forefinger and his thumb. Most of us can survive times of crisis. We summon the strength of faith or resolve for most any battle that we face head on. Whether it is in our professional or personal lives, we often overcome great obstacles. It is the small things like jealousy, anger, resentment, pettiness and negativity that eat us from the inside, which often bring about our downfall. Unlike a giant tree, we can identify and fight those moral or ethical “beetles.” We must, however, be constantly on guard. Harry Emerson Fosdick. The seven wonders of the world. A group of American school children were asked to list what they thought were the present . Peter's Basilica. Great Wall of China. While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The little girl replied, . I couldn't quite make up my mind because there are so many. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous. A gentle reminder - that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man. Draw out every pound, of course! Every morning, it credits you with 8. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the records of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no drawing against the . Therefore, there is never not enough time or too much time. Time management is decided by us alone and nobody else. It is never the case of us not having enough time to do things, but the case of whether we want to do it. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened. Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement. All through the night, the young marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital – the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night. Along towards dawn, the old man died. The marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited. Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her. The nurse was startled, . When I realised that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed. They all waited anxiously at their desks for the exam to begin. Once he handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over the papers. The professor, seeing the expression on everyone’s faces, told them the following: “I want you to write about what you see there.” The students, confused, got started on the inexplicable task. After all had been read, the classroom silent, the professor started to explain. I’m not going to grade you on this, I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot – and the same thing happens in our lives. However, we insist on focusing only on the black dot – the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationship with a family member, the disappointment with a friend. The dark spots are very small when compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds. Take your the eyes away from the black dots in your lives. Enjoy each one of your blessings, each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a life filled with love!”. An autobiography in five very short chapters. I walk down the street. There's a hole in the sidewalk. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. He consulted many physicians and was being treated by several. He did not stop consulting a galaxy of medical experts; he consumed heavy loads of drugs and underwent hundreds of injections. But the ache persisted with more vigour than before. The monk understood his problem and said that for sometime he should concentrate only on green colours and not to let his eyes fall on any other colours. It was a strange prescription, but he was desperate and decided to try it. You cannot paint the world green. It is foolish to shape the world, let us shape ourselves first. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter, so he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry the daughter. Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. The girl would then have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender's wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But, if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp- eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick her pebble from the bag. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble- strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night.. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience. Each boy must come into his own manhood. Maybe even some human would hurt him. The wind blew the grass and earth.. But he sat stoically.. It would be the only way he could be a man. It was then that he saw his father.. Even when we do not know it, our family and friends are watching out for us.. He stated that he was in a hurry and that he had an appointment at 9: 0. I took his vital signs, and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. While taking care of him, we began to engage in conversation. I asked him if he had a doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for awhile and was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, and hadn't recognized him in five years. I was surprised, and asked him, . In her grief, she went to the holy man and asked, . We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life. It is very important to me. But wherever she turned, in hotels and in other places, she found one tale after another of sadness and misfortune. She would later come to understand that it was the quest to find the magical mustard seed that drove away her suffering. It is six days of no sleep, constant physical and mental harassment and one special day at the Mud Flats. The Mud Flats are an area between San Diego and Tijuana where the water runs off and creates the Tijuana slues—a swampy patch of terrain where the mud will engulf you. The mud consumed each man till there was nothing visible but our heads. The instructors told us we could leave the mud if only five men would quit—just five men and we could get out of the oppressive cold. It was still over eight hours till the sun came up—eight more hours of bone- chilling cold. Le blog de Jocelyne Marque (Eure et Loir) auteure jeunesse. As mother of the bride I cannot recommend you highly enough to other brides and their Mums. It is a gem of a shop with very special people who genuinely love to get it right for the big day . My dress looked stunning and nothing was too much trouble for you! You are extremely talented and incredibly kind! After the shop I purchased my dress from, went into administration, Pirouette came to the rescue and allowed me to store my dress there. They were so reassuring treated me like any other Bride! With love, Mr and Mrs Davey xxx” - Heidi Davey“A lovely experience! After a dress mishap with another bridal shop, pirouette were amazing in fitting me in to choose a dress in time for my wedding, they couldn't do enough for me and were not pushy with sales. The beautiful setting is perfect for the type of dresses they sell. After I had brought the dress, everyone was helpful and professional in communicating when the dress would be ready, and when I could come in. The seamstress was lovely, luckily I did not need much alterations, which was fortunate with my time constraints. I even had my dress professionally packed into my suitcase (as I was getting married in las vegas) with all of my accessories! I feel really satisfied with my dress experience and encourage others to strongly consider this shop!” - Lisa Adams“The style of the dresses is exactly what I wanted and I instantly felt relaxed and excited as I was smoothly guided through the crazy world of buying a dress by the Pirouette team. Older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor, a standout talent central to the film's success) holes up in his room with his weed and his impressive record collection. Older sister Ann (Kelly Thornton) devotes herself to her studies. Conor is lost in the shuffle after being yanked out of private school and tossed into the Synge Street public school, which is like throwing fresh meat to lions. The student body and the priests at Synge Street are so rough that the movie feels like it takes place in a maximum- security prison for the criminally insane. Conor picks up his own personal bully immediately, as well as a scrawny red- headed sidekick. Conor can barely process the awesome- ness of what he sees, and Brendan takes on a mentor role, pontificating on the music business. Brendan is sunk in some lost dreams of his own, and one of his self- appointed roles in life is to teach his little brother the ropes. He kind of sort of plays the guitar, and he's innocent enough to believe that his music might get him to England, like Duran Duran. He also thinks it might make him seem cool to Raphina (Lucy Boynton), the aforementioned intriguing denim- clad girl across the street. Successful careers have been started for less. The bar for entering rock 'n' roll is pretty low; there are no entrance exams. Conor finds allies, one in particular with whom he forms a songwriting collaboration. Before they've found a gig, they decide to make a music video, and Conor asks Raphina to be in it. Shockingly (to him), she agrees. Dreams don't always line up with reality, and everyone (parents, siblings, the beautiful and complicated Raphina) learn that hard lesson. But sometimes reality is the dream: when a songwriter stumbles on the . Dreams are fleeting, but we are nothing without the . There are so many memorable sequences, quiet moments of growing connection between Conor and Raphina, the band's series of music videos, and a killer fight scene between Brendan and Conor. Who will he be without his role as dispenser- of- music history and provider of- courtship- tips to his little brother? As funny as the film is, John Carney infuses scenes with a poignancy bordering on deep blue melancholy. He is helped in this by the sensitive performance of Walsh- Peelo, required to run the gamut of emotions: hurt, fear, ambition, growing pains, first romantic feelings, a sense that the world is even more painful and scary than he had realized. It's a delight to watch the flickers of thought his eyes, his quiet listening face, the rising flush in his cheeks in moments of intensity. He's beautifully open as an actor.
